The Red Biquinho is a classic small chilli for pickling and for pizza topping. Purple Pumpkin is attractive in it's own right as a uniquely shaped fruit. And the Purple Princess, Explosivve Ember, Prairie Fire and Cha Cha all offer a good amount of heat for Thai-style dishes, while being small and compact and perfect as ornamental plants on a windowsill.
The varieties included in this set are:
- Purple Princess (approx. 30,000 to 60,000 SHUs). a very attractive chilli plant that produces an abundance of chillies - ideal as a pot plant for indoors. The fruits are early ripening, hot cooking chillies. Compact plant with greeny-violet leaves. Produces dark green fruits which grow pointing upwards and ripen reddy-violet. Voted 10th hottest by BBC Gardeners World in 2006 trial.
- Explosive Ember (approx. 30,000 to 50,000 SHUs). This plants has had many admirers in our show tunnel over the past few years. Purple leaves and purple to deep-red fruits about an inch long. This is a small plant (no more than 12" high normally) and is ideal for a windowsill.
- Purple Pumpkin (approx. 1,000 - 2,000 SHUs). This variety produces an abundance of shiny pumpkin shaped fruits that start off purple/purple-ish pink and ripen to a vibrant orange-red.
- Prairie Fire (approx. 70,000 to 80,000 SHUs). This is a very compact bush with small fiery chillies that mature from yellow to red. Ideal as a small pot plant. This is probably the quickest growing of the hot chillies we sell and a good choice for a kitchen window sill.
- Cha Cha (approx. 50,000 to 70,000 SHUs). This variety is very prolific and very attractive. It produces an abundance of yellow/orange pods that are perfect for Thai dishes. The fruits can be used fresh or dried and made into powders/flakes. Since this is a small compact plant (no more than 30cm high normally) it is ideal for a windowsill.
- Red Biquinho (approx. 1,000 SHUs). Biquinho is Portuguese for little beak and the chillies on this plant can be said to resemble small bird beaks. This plant produces a mass of teardrop or pearl shaped chilli fruits which hang from the plant like small lanterns. These popular chillies are often found preserved in jars or used on pizzas.

You can download the growing instructions that are sent out with the seedlings here.
Seedlings will need to be potted on. We recommend using Fertile Fiber peat-free compost. We use this product ourselves and found that it has the best properties compared to all the other pear-free composts currently available. Note that any additional items bought together with pre-order seedlings will be shipped at the same time as the seedlings when they are ready which is normally from March to May.
Shipping
Seeds are sown in Jan or Feb and we start sending our plants as soon as they are ready. Plug plants are usually available to ship from about the end of March onwards. But this is very weather dependent and can vary by several weeks. We will endeavor to notify our customers when the seedlings are likely to be ready closer to the time of shipping.
Two delivery options are available, Royal Mail and DPD, and both offer tracking. However, while the DPD is a next day service, Royal Mail is a 48-hour service, so naturally, the DPD price will will be higher. Shipping prices will be calculated based on the quantity of items in your cart and will be clearly displayed at checkout before you pay. The seedlings can survive for serval days in the post since they are well watered before shipping and a few days without light will not harm the seedlings.
Please be aware that if you place an order that contains a mix of 'pre-order' and 'buy it now' items, your order may be delayed until all items are ready to send. This is because we aim to send your entire order in one shipment. Thank you for your patience.
