In this set of six seedlings we've compiled our favourite tasty NuMex varieties. These chillies offer a range of quintessential NuMex, TexMex and authentic Mexican flavours.

Why not grow some Poblano and make a tasty Mexican chile Relleno. Or a salsa verde using Jalapeno and/or Serrano. Or even roast and stuff some Joe E Parkers and NuMex 6-4s.

The varieties included in this set are:

  1. Jalmundo (a cross between a bell pepper and a Jalapeño and was developed by the New Mexico State University) (approx. 17,000 SHUs). It is hotter and larger than the classic Jalapeño.
  2. Joe E Parker (approx. 800 SHUs). Mild, solid and fleshy up to 7 inches long. This is one of the most common commercially grown chiles in New Mexico and is also known as Hatch Chilli. It is often grilled by the roadside and sold in "trunk loads" in New Mexico.
  3. Poblano (approx. 1,000 - 2,000 SHUs). A large broad pepper tapering to a point, up to 6 inches long with a mild heat. Revered for its quality as a stuffing pepper. Stuff it with meat, cheese, rice or vegetables then bake them. Very popular in the USA and Mexico. Traditionally cooked green.
  4. Jalapeno NuMex Pinata (approx. 50,000 SHUs). A colourful variant of the classic Jalapeño. This plant produces fruits with vibrant colours from yellow through to orange and red. It was developed by the New Mexico State University.
  5. NuMex 6-4 (approx. 1,500 SHUs). Similar to an Anaheim, this improved New Mexico pepper has great flavour & mild heat. Traditionally when fresh, they are used either green or red with the skin removed.
  6. Serrano (approx. 40,000 to 60,000 SHUs). These are a larger variety of the traditional Serrano called Senor - about 3-4", but with the same heat. Used in salsas as a hotter alternative to Jalapeño in dishes such as salsa verde.

Information

We try our best to keep this list up to date. However, if the varieties advertised are not available at the time of packing, the best substitute will be used.

Growers Guide

These chilli seedlings respond well to extra warmth as young plants; 25°C is the ideal temperature.

You can download the growing instructions that are sent out with the seedlings here.

Seedlings will need to be potted on. We recommend using Fertile Fiber peat-free compost. We use this product ourselves and found that it has the best properties compared to all the other pear-free composts currently available. Note that any additional items bought together with pre-order seedlings will be shipped at the same time as the seedlings when they are ready which is normally from March to May.

Shipping

Seeds are sown in Jan or Feb and we start sending our plants as soon as they are ready. Plug plants are usually available to ship from about the end of March onwards. But this is very weather dependent and can vary by several weeks. We will endeavor to notify our customers when the seedlings are likely to be ready closer to the time of shipping.

Two delivery options are available, Royal Mail and DPD, and both offer tracking. However, while the DPD is a next day service, Royal Mail is a 48-hour service, so naturally, the DPD price will will be higher. Shipping prices will be calculated based on the quantity of items in your cart and will be clearly displayed at checkout before you pay. The seedlings can survive for serval days in the post since they are well watered before shipping and a few days without light will not harm the seedlings.

Please be aware that if you place an order that contains a mix of 'pre-order' and 'buy it now' items, your order may be delayed until all items are ready to send. This is because we aim to send your entire order in one shipment. Thank you for your patience.

Please let us know if you have any special delivery instructions at checkout.
